Top Duologies

Hi book lovers and welcome back to my blog!

Duologies are rare. Just looking at my Goodreads shelf, there aren't that many duologies I've read. Most fantasy series tend to have three books or more, and contemporaries usually end with one. But still, I've managed to put six duologies together that I'm going to share with you today! There is a good mix of sci-fi, fantasy, and contemporary...which is very surprising.

#6 - Just One Day by Gayle Forman

Starting off with my least favorite duology on this list (I still enjoyed it though). Gayle Forman is an award-winning author who wrote several best-selling YA books such as If I Stay, I Was Here, and Where She Went. I haven't read her other novels but for me, The Just One Day duology was a solid read.

When sheltered American good girl Allyson "LuLu" Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there's an undeniable spark. After just one day
together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson, until the following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem has left. Over the next year, Allyson embarks on a journey to come to terms with the narrow confines of her life, and through Shakespeare, travel, and a quest for her almost-true-love, to break free of those confines.

This was so much more than any other Paris books I've read. It captured Paris, but in a different light. Allyson went to different parts of Paris that normal tourists wouldn't go to and I experienced that with her. Just One Day was a beautiful story about self-discovery and love. Allyson had always felt lost...until she met Willem. When he left, she felt more lost than ever. Allyson always went with the flow and doing things her mother wanted her to do. But when she finally realized that it was her life and not her mother's, I really admired her for standing up for herself. It was a very good read but I found the lagging and very slow sometimes. Especially in the second book. It wasn't my favorite but I'm still glad I read it.

#5 - Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan

This is is not a very well-known duology but I loved it! By now, you probably know how much I love sci-fi books and this just had me so invested in the characters.

Everyone in the universe knows his name. Everyone in the universe fears him. But no one realizes that notorious outlaw Ia Cōcha is a seventeen-year-old girl.
A criminal mastermind and unrivaled pilot, Ia has spent her life terrorizing the Olympus Commonwealth, the imperialist nation that destroyed her home. When the Commonwealth captures her and her true identity is exposed, they see Ia’s age and talent as an opportunity: by forcing her to serve them, they will prove that no one is beyond their control.
Soon, Ia is trapped at the Commonwealth’s military academy, desperately plotting her escape. But new acquaintances—including Brinn, a seemingly average student with a closely-held secret, and their charming Flight Master, Knives—cause Ia to question her own alliances. Can she find a way to escape the Commonwealth’s clutches before these bonds deepen?

Ia was such a badass and I'm there for it. She was strong and resilient. Even in custody, she bested everybody and managed to almost escape. But under that tough facade, Ia actually had a soft side. No wonder Knives, her capture, fell in love with her! The story was very entertaining and it gets more exciting in the next book, Eclipse the Skies. This was probably the best book I've ever chosen blindly off a shelf! You should try that next time and see what happens!

#4 - Follow Me Back by A.V. Geiger

Tessa Hart’s world feels very small. Confined to her bedroom with agoraphobia, her one escape is the online fandom for pop sensation Eric Thorn. When he tweets to his fans, it’s like his speaking directly to her…

Eric Thorn is frightened by his obsessive fans. They take their devotion way too far. It doesn’t help that his PR team keeps posting to encourage their fantasies.

When a fellow pop star is murdered at the hands of a fan, Eric knows he has to do something to shatter his online image fast—like take down one of his top Twitter followers. But Eric’s plan to troll @TessaHeartsEric unexpectedly evolves into an online relationship deeper than either could have imagined. And when the two arrange to meet IRL, what should have made for the world’s best episode of Catfish takes a deadly turn…

I have my friend to thank for this book (give yourself a pat on the back if you're reading this!) because, without her, I wouldn't be introduced to this incredible duology. The mystery was spellbinding and the author left me in suspicion throughout the book. There were a lot of social media elements and it made the book so much more relatable. Tessa was a very shy character. She suffered from agoraphobia and as I learned more about her past, I could see why. But Eric brought her out of her shell, slowly but surely. Their romance was so cute and it made my hopelessly romantic heart melt. Am I being dramatic? Yes....yes, I am. This was told through flashbacks, tweets, and police transcripts and it made the story so much more realistic. The ending of this book definitely left some room for readers to think. It was a cliffhanger and it made me immediately want buy the second book. Which was so much more intense and left me in so much angst. But hey, that's how you know you've read a good book.

#3 - Pivot Point by Kasie West

Kasie West is known for her fluffy and super cute contemporary novels. So I was so surprised to find out that she had written a fantasy/sci-fi book. Being the big Kasie West lover that I am, I had to check it out.

Addison Coleman’s life is one big “What if?” As a Searcher, whenever Addie is faced with a choice, she can look into the future and see both outcomes. It’s the ultimate insurance plan against disaster. Or so she thought. When Addie’s parents ambush her with the news of their divorce, she has to pick who she wants to live with—her father, who is leaving the paranormal compound to live among the “Norms,” or her mother, who is staying in the life Addie has always known. Addie loves her life just as it is, so her answer should be easy. One Search six weeks into the future proves it’s not.

In one potential future, Addie is adjusting to life outside the Compound as the new girl in a Norm high school where she meets Trevor, a cute, sensitive artist who understands her. In the other path, Addie is being pursued by the hottest guy in school—but she never wanted to be a quarterback’s girlfriend. When Addie’s father is asked to consult on a murder in the Compound, she’s unwittingly drawn into a dangerous game that threatens everything she holds dear. With love and loss in both lives, it all comes down to which reality she’s willing to live through... and who she can’t live without.

I was so intrigued by the synopsis. I wouldn't say that the idea is...unique. But the book was uniquely written. Kasie West added her own touch to the fantastical element of this story. The touch that makes me love so many of her other books. This book was fluffy...but also dark. The pace didn't pick up until the end of the book, but when it did...boyyyyyyy. Kasie West definitely has the magic touch when it comes to writing the perfect guys. Trevor, in my mind, is perfect. But he's fictional so don't attack me! This book went back and forth between two futures, which was super cool. This was the perfect book if you're looking for something cute but with a lot of action. The ending led perfectly to the next book where it gets even more wild. If that's even possible.

#2 - One of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus

As I've mentioned in an earlier blog post, this book was my favorite book from the mystery genre. It just happened to be a duology!

Yale hopeful Bronwyn has never publicly broken a rule.
Sports star Cooper only knows what he's doing in the baseball diamond.
Bad boy Nate is one misstep away from a life of crime.
Prom queen Addy is holding together the cracks in her perfect life.
And outsider Simon, creator of the notorious gossip app at Bayview High, won't ever talk about any of them again.
He dies 24 hours before he could post their deepest secrets online. Investigators conclude it's no accident. All of them are suspects.
    Everyone has secrets, right?
What really matters is how far you'll go to protect them.

This mystery had me hooked and I could not put it down! I was trying to find out who the murderer was along with the book...but to no avail, sadly. All I knew was I didn't want any of the four main characters to be it since I got attached to them. The ending left me speechless and it was so action-packed. The second book is a different mystery but it follows different characters with some crossovers from the first. Like the first book, it was just as captivating. Eek!

#1 - Warcross by Marie Lu

When a game called Warcross takes the world by storm, one girl hacks her way into its dangerous depths. For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn't just a game—it's a way of life. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. When Emika hacks into the game illegally, she's convinced she'll be arrested, and is shocked when she gets a call from the game's creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year's tournament in order to uncover a security problem ... and he wants Emika for the job. In this sci-fi thriller, #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu conjures an immersive, exhilarating world where choosing who to trust may be the biggest gamble of all.

You know how sometimes you would fly through a book, ends up loving it, but then a week later, you have a hard time remember what happened? Well, this is the exact case with this book. Haha. Ha. Ha.

    Whoops.

I do plan on rereading this duology and see how much I still love it. But it's number one on this list because after reading it, it left me in pure ectasy because of how good the book was. I didn't think Wildcard was as good as Warcross but both books were still so good. Marie Lu definitely is one of my favorite authors and she has an excellent way of weaving together a fantastical story and leaving you breathless at the end. That's why I'm super excited for her new book, Skyhunter! Emika is another badass who...I'm kind of drawing a blank...

    Whoops. XD

That is my top six duologies I've read. To be honest, I've read seven. so there weren't that many options to begin with. But thanks for sticking until the end and dealing with my rambling. If you liked this, make sure to like and follow! I will see (yes...I can see you through the screen...) If you have any recommendations for books, leave it down in the comment! Also, if you want to see any specific content, leave a comment too since this blog is as much of mine as it is yours! Peace out!
